This Western Union International, Inc. share certificate, dated August 9, 1971, represents 1,000 fully paid common stock shares and is printed in an arresting green palette, typical of secure American stock certificates of the early 1970s. The central vignette depicts a robed allegorical woman reclining over a globe, symbolising global communication and reach. Western Union’s slogan, “All Around the World,” is emblazoned on the left seal beneath the WUI logo, reinforcing its international telecommunications identity.
Incorporated in Delaware, the certificate was registered through the Chemical Bank New York Trust Company and issued to Cede & Co., a common nominee name used for institutional holdings. The engraving was executed by the Security-Columbian Banknote Company, whose distinctive guilloché patterns flank the sides with precision. The large-scale issue of 1,000 shares suggests corporate-level transactions, possibly involving institutional brokerage or transfer agents of the era.
This certificate remains in decent vintage condition, with punch cancellations, archival stamps, and minor wear consistent with age and transfer activity. The reverse is fully endorsed, dated August 18, 1971, and provides legal assignment details. At approximately 12 x 8 inches, it stands as an attractive artefact from the communications sector’s transitional decades, particularly as Western Union evolved from telegraphy into global data and satellite services.
