1969 stock certificate for 100 shares in Penn Central Company, with modernist allegorical vignette of Mercury over an urban-industrial backdrop. Issued to Reynolds & Co., later transferred and cancelled.
This certificate features a clean blue border with geometric patterning, framing a dramatic vignette of Mercury, Roman god of commerce, sprinting above a stylised cityscape. His presence, combined with transport motifs, reflects Penn Central’s role as a transportation and logistics powerhouse. The certificate’s crisp layout and minimalist palette exemplify late 1960s corporate design, with strong visual appeal for framing or study.
Dated June 11, 1969, it represents 100 shares in Penn Central Company, formed from the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad—a short-lived but significant union in American rail history. Despite its initial promise, Penn Central’s collapse in 1970 remains one of the largest corporate bankruptcies of the era. This certificate was printed by the Security-Columbian Banknote Company, with Irving Trust Company as registrar.
In decent vintage condition, with mild toning and handling wear, this certificate measures approximately 12 x 8 inches. The reverse side documents its 1969 transfer to Cede & Co., with stamp and perforation markings confirming its cancellation. A compelling item for collectors of transport history, bankruptcy-era ephemera, or corporate design from the late 1960s.
