The warm stone cottages of Richmond, North Yorkshire, gather around a tree-lined green, above which the mighty form of Richmond Castle dominates the skyline. Built into the contours of the hill, the castle keep rises dramatically over rooftops and trees — a striking reminder of medieval power nestled within a quiet Dales town.
This postcard was published by J. Arthur Dixon Ltd., one of Britain’s most prolific and respected 20th-century postcard producers. The caption dates the construction of the castle to 1076, with its immense 12th-century keep noted for its scale and engineering. As printed on the reverse, the keep rises 114 feet above the moat, underscoring its strategic might and architectural prestige. This edition was part of their Yorkshire Dales series, code L6/PYD 82793.
Though it shows edge wear and minor damage to the upper right corner, the card retains its rich colouration and historical clarity. For collectors of Norman architecture, Yorkshire heritage, or vintage British topographical cards, this is a valuable piece of visual documentation — a portal to the enduring strength and story of Richmond.
