Beneath the soaring vaults of Gloucester Cathedral’s choir, the floor tells a story as enduring as the stones themselves. This beautifully produced postcard highlights two intricate tile panels depicting biblical scenes — “Joseph on his death bed” and “The Institution of the Passover” — each framed with decorative medieval motifs in deep terracotta and ochre tones.
These tiles were laid during the cathedral’s refurbishment by eminent Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott (1868–73), using designs produced by William and Henry Godwin of Lugwardine, Hereford. The sgraffito scenes are thought to be by Scott himself, visually narrating Old Testament episodes for those who knelt upon them in worship. This card forms part of a limited nine-part series, published and produced by RJL Smith & Associates, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, with photography by RJL Smith.
With minimal edge wear and vibrant printing, this card is both a visual document of Gothic Revival ecclesiastical craftsmanship and a meaningful collectible for those drawn to sacred art, British architecture, or the legacy of cathedral restoration.
