In the Edwardian parlour, few things embodied warmth and refinement like a well-designed fireplace. This large and visually rich 1910 advertisement, published in The Sphere on May 14, 1910, features a seated woman admiring a glowing hearth framed by an exquisitely carved firegrate — part of Carron’s “XVIII Century Design” collection. With elegance and restraint, the image speaks to the era’s reverence for Georgian style, revived and reinterpreted for modern living.
Carron’s firegrates were advertised as being drawn from original 18th-century woodcarvings, executed by “distinguished artists over a century ago.” Each piece bore the Carron hallmark as a sign of authenticity and craftsmanship. Measuring approx. 7½ x 10½ inches, the advert outlines a selection that included interiors, registers, hob grates, dog grates, recesses, and panels, offered in various finishes such as brass, bronze, and armour bright. The company operated from Stirlingshire with showrooms across the UK — from London and Liverpool to Edinburgh, Bristol, and Dublin.
This is an outstanding piece for collectors of architectural design ephemera, interior history, or Edwardian-era product illustration. Preserved in decent vintage condition, it captures the thoughtful balance between period aesthetic and 20th-century manufacturing excellence.
