Beneath an endless blue sky, La Barre des Écrins rises like a cathedral of ice, its jagged ridge and glacial mantle etched against the silence of the French Alps. This photograph captures not just a summit, but an atmosphere — where altitude, solitude, and frozen grandeur collide.

Printed in France by Images des 4 Saisons Sarl and attributed to photographer Claude Fortoul, this postcard offers a crisp, colour-rich view of the 4102-metre peak, the highest point of the Écrins massif. The foreground features the north face of the Glacier Blanc, historically climbed on 25 June 1864 by Walker, Whymper, Moore, and their local guides Cros and Almer. The back of the card includes a short poetic expression in Provençal dialect and a quote describing the peak as the “authentic ambassador of the Hautes-Alpes.”

For collectors of alpine landscapes, mountaineering ephemera, or French natural heritage, this piece holds a quiet majesty. Preserving such imagery ensures these wilderness landmarks continue to inspire, long after their snows have melted for the season.
