With its bold serif lettering and precision illustration, this 1900 advert reflects the confident elegance of Victorian industrial design. At its centre is a crisp depiction of a Brandauer pen nib — refined, mechanical, and promising a smooth writing experience free from scratch or spurt. It’s a fine example of how late-19th-century manufacturers used clean graphic clarity to sell quality and reliability.
Issued by C. Brandauer & Co. of Birmingham and published in the Illustrated London News, the advert promotes their Circular-Pointed Pens — a rounded nib series marketed as writing “as smoothly as a lead pencil.” Notably awarded seven prize medals, these pens boasted a specially processed point and were sold as assorted sample boxes for seven stamps via mail order. The company was part of Birmingham’s thriving pen-making industry, then the global centre for steel nib production.
Well preserved and richly illustrative, this original piece offers a rare glimpse into the craft and confidence of Edwardian-era stationery advertising. Ideal for collectors of writing ephemera, pen history, or Birmingham industrial heritage — a paper fragment with enduring character.
