It is 1916, and the distant rumble of artillery echoes over the fields of Europe. Flying low and purposeful, the LVG C.II glides above the frontlines, its engine growling steadily as its crew peers down, gathering vital intelligence for the German forces. You can almost feel the tense concentration of the observer, the cool air whipping around the struts and canvas, and the immense bravery demanded by every mission across hostile skies. This print captures the exact moment where courage, technology, and war collided high above the trenches.

This highly collectible Flightcolour No. 16 print from Flight International (6 September 1980) features the rare LVG C.II — a two-seat reconnaissance aircraft built by Luft-Verkehrs Gesellschaft of Berlin in 1916. The aircraft depicted here, restored and preserved by the Shuttleworth Trust, was one of the few examples captured by the Royal Air Force at the end of the First World War. Measuring approximately 11 x 8⅜ inches and in good condition, this print offers an invaluable visual link to the evolution of aerial reconnaissance during one of history’s most tumultuous periods.

Preserving prints such as this honours the extraordinary skill, innovation, and sacrifice of early aviators. For collectors, historians, and enthusiasts, this print represents a powerful connection to a pivotal time when flight was still raw, new, and unimaginably dangerous. A significant addition to any serious WWI aviation or military history collection.
