Close your eyes and step back in time to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Imagine standing outside the Garrett Works factory in Leiston, Suffolk, as the rhythmic churning of steam engines echoes across the cobbled yard. The air is filled with the distinct aroma of hot oil and burning coal, as engineers and craftsmen labour tirelessly to perfect machines that would change lives. In the distance, the Merryweather Fire Engine of 1901 gleams in the sunlight, its brass fixtures polished to perfection, ready to roar into action at the sound of the alarm. The Garrett Portable of the late 1850s stands proudly nearby, a pioneer in portable power, a lifeline for farms and small industries. You can almost hear the cheers of workers as these engines brought new efficiency to their trades.

Picture the Princess Marina of 1916, pulling a heavy load across a muddy field, its engine roaring with determination as a farmer waves in gratitude, marvelling at its strength and reliability. Nearby, the 1919 Garrett 5CD Suffolk Punch glides along gracefully, a symbol of endurance in a world still recovering from the Great War. Steam hisses from its valves as a young engineer adjusts its controls, pride evident in his every movement. This was an age where machines weren’t just tools—they were partners, transforming labour into progress. The sheer artistry of their design, coupled with their immense practicality, speaks of a time when innovation knew no bounds.

Now imagine walking through the halls of the Long Shop Museum, where these majestic machines are lovingly preserved. You can feel the echoes of history surround you, with each exhibit telling a story of resilience and human ingenuity. The Merryweather, Princess Marina, and Suffolk Punch are more than just machines—they’re monuments to an era when steam and steel carried dreams forward. Each postcard in this collection captures a piece of that world, offering not just a keepsake, but a bridge to a time of unyielding determination and ground breaking progress. For the collector, these are not just images—they are windows to an age of industrial grandeur.
