The powerful hum of the engine cuts through the sky as the Bristol F.2B Fighter D8096 glides gracefully over the countryside, its dual wings casting bold shadows across the landscape. In this moment, captured forever in this vintage print, one can almost feel the throb of the Rolls-Royce Falcon III engine, the taut canvas wings straining against the pull of the wind, and the keen-eyed vigilance of its two-man crew. This image transports the viewer straight into the intensity and spirit of early 20th-century aerial combat.
First flown in late 1916, the Bristol Fighter experienced a difficult introduction when No. 48 Squadron RFC suffered heavy losses at the Western Front. However, a tactical change to employ the aircraft as a fighting machine rather than a reconnaissance platform transformed its fate. Powered by the formidable 280 h.p. Rolls-Royce Falcon III engine, the Fighter achieved a maximum speed of 108 mph at 13,000 ft, making it a fearsome adversary in the skies. Over 3,100 examples were built, with the type seeing extensive service throughout the Great War. The subject of this print, D8096, originally built for private sale, was restored to Mk II standard in the 1930s and today flies proudly as part of the Shuttleworth Trust’s collection. Published by Flight, London SE1, 1971, this is a genuine period aviation collectible.
Owning this piece offers more than visual admiration–it is a profound connection to a turning point in aviation history. This vintage Flight Colour print stands as a lasting tribute to the resilience, innovation, and heroism of early military aviation, allowing collectors, historians, and enthusiasts to safeguard and celebrate an enduring legacy.
