Text: Flightcolour No 125: The Shuttleworth Collection’s 1915 Avro 504K “E3404” (c/n 61400) was rebuilt by Avro apprentices. Flying again by 1955, the aircraft took part in Reach for the Sky. It is based at Old Warden, England.
Internal notes: QC passed

The Avro 504K “E3404”, its deep green fuselage cutting through the sky, moves with the elegance of a time when flight was still a daring new frontier. The steady hum of its rotary engine fills the open air, a rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat that once trained the earliest aviators of the Royal Flying Corps. The cool wind rushes past the open cockpit, where the pilot—clad in leather, goggles tight against his face—keeps a firm grip on the control stick. The smell of castor oil lingers, the signature scent of early aviation, mixing with the crisp English air as the Avro soars over the countryside. Below, rolling fields stretch endlessly, a patchwork of green and gold, dotted with the occasional farmhouse, its chimney smoke curling lazily skyward. This is not just an aircraft—it is a living, breathing piece of history, still flying today as a testament to the golden age of biplanes.

Holding this vintage Flight Library print, you can feel the era come alive. The wood and fabric wings flex under the strain of the wind, the wires humming ever so faintly as the aircraft banks gently in the sky. This very machine trained World War I pilots, preparing them for the deadly dogfights that awaited them over the battlefields of Europe. Even after the war, it found new purpose, flying in Reach for the Sky, a film celebrating the heroism of British aviators. This is a machine that has lived through generations, a survivor rebuilt with care by Avro apprentices, each rivet and strut a continuation of its remarkable story. It is not just a relic; it is a reminder of a time when the sky belonged to those with the courage to take flight.

For collectors, aviation enthusiasts, and history lovers, this print is more than a decorative piece—it is a portal to the dawn of military aviation, to a time when the roar of a biplane overhead meant adventure, training, or even the first taste of freedom in flight. Whether displayed in a study, an aviation-themed room, or a private collection, it is a rare and invaluable artifact, capturing a machine that still inspires awe more than a century after its first flight. To own this is to own a piece of the past, frozen in midair, forever soaring.
