Step into the cobbled charm of St. Andrews Street and behold The Merchants House, its timber-framed frontage and leaded windows echoing Plymouth’s Elizabethan prosperity. Bathed in warm summer light, this historic postcard captures the quiet dignity of the city’s architectural heritage.
Built in the 16th century and once home to William Parker, Mayor of Plymouth in 1601, The Merchants House stands as a rare survivor of pre-Blitz Plymouth. The house was restored in 1978 by Plymouth City Council and opened to the public as a museum branch. This card, published by Beric Tempest & Co Ltd, is a colour print typical of late 20th-century tourist ephemera.
Preserving such an evocative image helps keep Plymouth’s layered history alive. For collectors, this is more than a picture — it’s a tangible thread to a storied past, now protected in curated personal archives and thoughtful displays.
