Set beneath a golden English sky, this postcard captures the idyllic charm of Twyford School in 1846, with uniformed boys engaged in cricket against the backdrop of a chapel and leafy grounds. The scene, softly toned and richly detailed, evokes the genteel pace of Victorian school life, where tradition and leisure intertwined on manicured lawns and beneath chapel spires.
Twyford School, located near Winchester, is one of England’s oldest preparatory schools, founded in the 17th century. The image reproduced here — titled “Boys at Play – 1846” — was printed and published by Beric Tempest & Co. Ltd., St. Ives, Cornwall, on their classic Colourcard format. A handwritten note dated 4th May 1992 adds a layer of personal warmth, sent shortly after a spring gathering. The original artwork offers a rare visual insight into pre-photographic childhood scenes, making it a valuable keepsake for those interested in educational heritage and rural English life.
Though gently worn at the edges, this piece remains a delightful blend of educational, artistic, and social history. Ideal for collectors of school ephemera, cricket history, or historical English illustrations.
