Amid the post-war stillness of 1950s London, this bird’s-eye view of the Tower of London reveals the fortress in its full, formidable geometry. The River Thames glides past its ancient walls, and a mid-century vessel coasts below — a visual echo of how the capital has always flowed between the past and present. The photo’s quiet intensity, coupled with the sepia tones, evokes a city in reflection, poised between centuries.
The postcard was sent on 13 September 1956, bearing a 2½d brown Queen Elizabeth II definitive stamp and a London postmark. The back carries a warm family message addressed to Bulkington, Warwickshire. Produced by Aerofilms Ltd. for the Ministry of Works, this card is designated A(N)12, marking it as part of an official documentation series. A rare aerial perspective, this card is ideal for collectors of both architectural and London memorabilia.
Light edge wear and a damaged lower-left corner are present, consistent with a well-travelled life. This piece has passed quality control and remains a valuable visual and social document, ideal for display, study or archival.
