Beneath a sky brushed with fair-weather clouds, the mysterious silhouette of Silbury Hill rises from the Wiltshire landscape — its ancient, grass-covered flanks echoing the labour of Neolithic hands over 4,000 years ago. This photograph captures the monument’s scale and serenity from the south-west, with subtle texture revealing the stepped nature of the mound’s terracing.
This postcard, published under Crown copyright (1968) by George Pulman & Sons Ltd., was issued for the Ministry of Public Building and Works as part of an educational heritage series. Silbury Hill, part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, remains one of Britain’s most enigmatic prehistoric structures, its true purpose still lost to time despite extensive archaeological interest.
Postcards such as this invite us to act as guardians of the past. Owning and preserving this piece offers a tangible connection to Britain’s deep ceremonial landscapes — a reverent fragment of our enduring dialogue with the ancient world.
