Bathed in the golden haze of dusk, three spherical radar domes rise from the desolate sweep of Fylingdales Moor, their smooth, alien silhouettes echoing across the ridgeline. The image captures the eerie serenity of a remote military outpost, silhouetted against the soft folds of moorland terrain — part of Britain’s Cold War landscape, framed by the natural beauty of the North York Moors National Park.
Published by Pedley Postcards and photographed by Mike Williams, this image shows the original ‘Ballistic Missile Early Warning System’ (BMEWS) radomes that were operational until the 1990s, when they were replaced by a pyramid-shaped structure. Located between Whitby and Pickering, RAF Fylingdales played a crucial role in NATO’s missile detection network, its distinctive white spheres once visible from miles around.
A compelling addition for Cold War historians, Yorkshire collectors, or enthusiasts of post-war defence architecture, this card bridges two worlds — military vigilance and moorland isolation. A rare record of Britain’s defence legacy before its technological transformation.
