Evoking the tranquil might of the River Tweed, this 1973 multiview postcard celebrates Berwick-upon-Tweed’s architectural marvels — the Old Bridge, the New Bridge, and the majestic Royal Border Bridge. A trio of carefully framed scenes draws the viewer into the layered history of England’s northernmost town, where medieval foundations meet the elegance of 19th-century engineering. The arched silhouettes cast long reflections across the water, quietly narrating centuries of borderland exchange.
Posted on 29 August 1973 and printed by E.T.W. Dennis & Sons Ltd., Scarborough, the postcard features a magenta 2½p Queen Elizabeth II stamp with a Berwick-on-Tweed cancellation. The warm handwritten message from Bertha and Dick describes a sunlit day at the beach, adding a human note of leisure to the structured geometry of the bridges. As with others in this correspondence series, it’s addressed to Miss Galloway in Eaglescliffe — offering further appeal for those building themed collections around postal history or recurring addressees.
With colours that remain bright and structure well-preserved, this postcard serves as a handsome tribute to Northumberland’s most photogenic town. It’s ideal for collectors of historic bridge imagery, 1970s British travel ephemera, or those with roots in the borderlands. A tangible moment of connection, geography, and calm — ready for safekeeping.
