FOR COLLECTIBLE PURPOSES ONLY. This is a vintage, cancelled share certificate and holds no financial value. A fantastic piece of scripophily / industrial history.
The document is bordered in deep violet with an elaborate guilloché pattern, centred by a crisply engraved map highlighting Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Maryland. On either side, neoclassical allegorical figures symbolise industry and power, framing the proud title Virginia Electric and Power Company. Issued on October 15, 1973, and cancelled with characteristic perforations, this certificate captures the visual authority of American utility corporations during the early 1970s.
Founded in the early 20th century, Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) played a vital role in electrifying the mid-Atlantic region. By the 1970s, it stood as a significant energy provider in the American South, and this certificate was a legal document of ownership as well as a material artefact of regional development. Printed by the American Bank Note Company, it showcases the firm’s exceptional security printing methods and stylised engraving techniques used across financial institutions of the period.
Measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches, this piece is preserved in very good vintage condition, exhibiting only light age toning and expected archival wear. The reverse retains its unused transfer section, with punch-coded numerals and historic typeface detailing. A compelling addition for collectors of utilities ephemera, corporate Americana, or engraved securities.
