1963 stock certificate for 50 common shares in Virginia Electric and Power Company, featuring allegorical figures and a regional map. Cancelled example issued to SAFEX & Company.
An engaging piece of mid-century American corporate design, this share certificate is bordered in deep violet with finely detailed engraving by the American Bank Note Company. The central vignette depicts allegorical male and female figures flanking a shaded relief map of the company’s service area — Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Stylised Romanesque typography and serial detailing contribute to its visual authority, ideal for framing or scripophily display.
Issued on April 29, 1963, this certificate was made out to SAFEX & Company and later cancelled, as shown by perforations and bank stamps from November 1973. Printed by the prestigious American Bank Note Company, this item embodies the visual and procedural norms of postwar American utility firms, operating during an era of intense infrastructural expansion and regulation. The issuing firm, Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO), was a major regional provider and remains historically significant.
Preserved in decent vintage condition, with minor archival wear and light toning consistent with age. It is printed on standard stock paper, measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches. All visual elements remain clear, including borders, typography, and cancellation marks. A representative example for collectors of cancelled share certificates, energy-sector ephemera, or engraved American securities.
