From the schoolroom to the counting house, this beautifully printed vintage advert captures two practical products once found in homes and offices across the empire. On the left, a tactile American Drawing Slate invites children to sketch scenes with chalk on reusable surfaces. On the right, Perry & Co.’s bold circular trademark promotes their patented Royal Aromatic Elastic Bands, hailed as essential for libraries, preserves, and general utility.
The advert, printed in a richly coloured blue-green tone on thin periodical stock, is likely from the late 19th or early 20th century. Though undated and source-unknown, the reference to Holborn Viaduct and the design of the Perry & Co. trademark help anchor it firmly within the Edwardian or Victorian commercial era. The American Drawing Slates were marketed as “clean, complete, and durable” at 1s. and 2s., while Perry’s bands were framed as more economical and convenient than string — a detail that underscores evolving domestic habits.
In decent vintage condition with crisp printing and ornamental detail, this dual advert is a delightful piece of everyday history. Collectors of vintage office supplies, educational tools, or London manufacturing heritage will find this a visually and thematically engaging addition to any archive.
