With allegorical artistry and royal endorsements, this compelling 1910 advertisement celebrates over half a century of British soapmaking prestige. John Knight’s Primrose Soap, honoured with the Grand Prix at the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition, is here framed as both a heritage product and a modern essential. Twin illustrations of the award diploma — featuring classical figures and radiant beams of purity — flank a central image referencing the soap’s earlier triumph at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
Published in The Graphic on May 14, 1910, this large-format advert (approx. 8 x 4¼ inches) reflects a blend of Edwardian promotional flair and Victorian institutional memory. An excerpt from The Times (1852) is quoted to reinforce the soap’s esteemed history: “extreme sweetness and pureness… the agreeable emolliency of a fancy soap.” Supplied by John Knight Ltd., soapmakers to H.M. the King, the advert also urges buyers to verify the Royal Arms and brand stamp on every bar.
This is a rich piece of commercial ephemera for collectors of Victorian-to-Edwardian advertising, royal suppliers, or Franco-British Exhibition memorabilia. In decent vintage condition, it stands as both a marketing artefact and a document of consumer trust built over generations.
