FOR COLLECTIBLE PURPOSES ONLY. This is a vintage, cancelled share certificate and holds no financial value. A fantastic piece of scripophily / industrial history.
This genuine Hill’s Supermarkets Inc share certificate, dated May 12, 1960, represents a classic era in American retail and corporate design. Printed in bold orange and black with an engraved vignette of an eagle in flight, the certificate captures the visual confidence of mid-century American capitalism. The detailed borderwork and embossed corporate seal reflect the traditional artistry of financial printing when even ordinary business documents were imbued with a sense of permanence and pride.
Issued to Kristoffer O. Thomassen and Mrs. Elvida Thomassen for one hundred Class A shares, this certificate was registered through The New York Trust Company. Incorporated under the laws of New York, Hill’s Supermarkets grew as part of the post-war boom in American consumer culture — a time when supermarket chains became symbols of modern living and economic optimism. The typography and engraving, typical of the period, were produced to inspire both credibility and aspiration, qualities mirrored in the company’s ambitious expansion during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Measuring approximately 11¾ x 8¼ inches, the certificate remains in decent vintage condition with light toning and minor archival marks consistent with age. Over sixty years old, it stands as both a collectible and a historical document — a tangible link to the evolution of American retail, financial printing, and the culture of ownership in the modern age. A perfect addition for collectors of vintage corporate ephemera, financial history, or engraved securities.
