This 1973-issued certificate for 1,000 common shares in Crowell Collier and Macmillan Inc is a visually engaging artefact of American publishing history. At its centre, a neoclassical allegorical scene depicts figures of wisdom and the arts, rendered in delicate monochrome. The vivid red guilloché border adds a sense of institutional authority to the composition, with strong Art Deco typographic accents throughout. Measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches, the certificate is bold in both format and cultural reference.
Incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware, the issuing entity was a major force in educational publishing and media distribution in the postwar period. The certificate was printed by American Bank Note Company and originally issued to CEDE & Co., a securities depository nominee. It bears the signature of Raymond E. Hagel, Chairman and President, and is registered by Chemical Bank of New York. Notably, the certificate includes an overstamp indicating its rebranding to Macmillan Inc, reflecting a significant corporate transition during a key phase in U.S. publishing consolidation.
Condition is decent for its age, with minor toning, cancellation perforations, and several endorsement stamps visible. Dated March 6, 1973, the reverse includes detailed transfer and brokerage information, enhancing its value to collectors interested in publishing history, stock ephemera, or U.S. corporate transitions of the 1970s.
