1971 certificate for 4 common shares in Consolidated Edison Company of New York, featuring allegorical figure of Liberty with industrial skyline. Issued under the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act and cancelled.
Presented in rich reddish-brown tones, this certificate is dominated by a dynamic allegorical vignette of Liberty or Industry personified, holding a torch and orb, with factory chimneys and a New York skyline in the distance. Bordered in classic geometric engraving, it reflects the visual language of American corporate identity in the early 1970s. The layout remains clean and symmetrical, with an embossed corporate seal dated 1884.
Dated March 6, 1971, the certificate represents four common shares in the Consolidated Edison Company of New York, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States. It was issued to Herbert Sheingold as custodian for Richard A. Sheingold under the New York Uniform Gifts to Minors Act, a detail that speaks to both legal and familial investment practices of the era. The document was printed by the American Bank Note Company and registered through First National City Bank.
Measuring approximately 12 x 8 inches, this cancelled certificate remains in decent vintage condition, with minor toning and archival wear. The reverse includes transfer instructions and validation stamps from Evans & Co., Inc. A representative example of 1970s utility-sector scripophily, particularly appealing for those interested in legal trust designations and energy history.
