FOR COLLECTIBLE PURPOSES ONLY. This is a vintage, cancelled share certificate and holds no financial value. A fantastic piece of scripophily / industrial history.
This 1950 ACF-Brill Motors Company share certificate is an early post-war example of American industrial securities design, distinguished by its blue border, detailed guilloché, and a central vignette of two semi-nude male allegorical figures representing industry and manufacturing. They are positioned either side of a large gear with the ACF-Brill monogram, alluding to the company’s deep roots in transport and engineering. The document certifies 100 common shares at a par value of $2.50 each, issued to Francis I. du Pont & Co.
Formed from the merger of American Car and Foundry and the J.G. Brill Company, ACF-Brill played a major role in the development of streetcars, trolleybuses, and other electric transit vehicles across North America. The company was incorporated in Delaware, and this certificate was engraved by the American Bank Note Company, known for their exemplary craftsmanship. The certificate is countersigned by Chase National Bank of New York, adding financial authority and transfer validation to the document.
Dated July 31, 1950, and measuring approximately 11½ x 7½ inches, this certificate remains in decent vintage condition with expected toning, light wear, and clear cancellation punches. The reverse is fully completed and dated August 2, 1950, with endorsements from Pershing & Co. and tax-related transfer stamps. It holds particular interest for collectors of American transportation, engineering, and Du Pont-affiliated investment ephemera.
