The cool morning air at Mudanjiang Powerstation carries a thick mist of steam as QJ 1675 roars softly to life, starting duty on 20 March 2002. You stand close enough to feel the radiant warmth rising off the black, glistening iron of the locomotiveâs boiler. Wisps of white steam curl lazily around the wheels, and the smell of hot oil and coal fills your lungs. The great engine trembles slightly, alive and eager, and you can hear the rhythmic heartbeat of pistons moving deep inside. You are there, on the edge of the track, the towering bulk of the QJ looming before you, a monument of steel and sweat preparing to write another chapter in its endless story of labour.
Running your fingers across the mounted photograph, the Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper seems to hum under your touch, pulling you deeper into the moment. The fresh blue of the front number plate flashes sharply against the soot-darkened body. Around you, the hum of workers beginning their day mixes with the shrill whistle of a distant shunter, and the dull thud of coal being loaded somewhere beyond the yard. You hear every creak of hot metal expanding, feel every pulse of pressure building in the engineâs veins. You are not just looking–you are standing right there, wrapped in the sights, smells, and sounds of a world that still beats with pride and resilience.
The handwritten caption tells you all you need to know: Mudanjiang Powerstation. 20 March 2002. Starting Duty. But the image tells a richer, deeper story. This is a beginning, not an end–a portrait of strength ready to move mountains, a reminder that even in a fading era, the spirit of hard work and determination burns fiercely. Owning this photo is not simply acquiring an image; it is holding a living moment of pure, enduring purpose.
