This sunlit postcard captures The Esplanade at South Cliff, Scarborough, in full 1960s splendour. A manicured floral roundel draws the eye into a sweep of grand Victorian seafront hotels, as a few scattered figures wander the tidy promenade beneath a vivid blue sky. The image is rich in both detail and sentiment — a quintessential British coastal scene in natural colour.
Published by H. Webster of Helvellyn House, Keswick, this card was posted from Scarborough, with a visible cancellation dated 4 September (year unspecified, likely mid-1960s), and a deep violet 3d Queen Elizabeth II stamp. The message cheerfully describes a mix of foggy drizzle and better weather, signed “R. E. O.” with a kind note to a residential school.
This standard-size card (approx. 5½ x 3½ inches) is in decent vintage condition, though some corner creasing is visible. A meaningful keepsake for lovers of Scarborough history, Yorkshire seaside towns, or vintage hotel architecture, offering both visual pleasure and personal nostalgia.
