The morning air is crisp and sharp as you stand on the edge of a dusty railway siding in Pinglin, 10 March 2002. The sun casts a pale, golden glow across the barren landscape, and there, in front of you, waits the proud little steam locomotive SD2105, blackened by years of faithful service. Steam hisses and curls from her cylinders, whispering tales of countless journeys. You can hear the soft clang of tools against metal, the low murmur of the crew preparing for the next leg of their endless dance with the rails. The outbound empties stretch behind her, a silent promise of the heavy loads to come, their wheels creaking softly in the cool morning breeze.
You reach out and feel the textured surface of the mounted photo, printed on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper, its depth of colour capturing every smoky swirl and every weathered bolt with breathtaking clarity. The warmth of the steam contrasts with the chill in the air, and the earth beneath your boots vibrates ever so faintly with life. Around you, telephone wires hum gently overhead, the scent of coal smoke mixing with the faint tang of cold, damp earth. The locomotive breathes, alive and ready, a stubborn old warrior waiting patiently for her chance to thunder down the line once again. It’s not a still photograph you are holding–itâs a living memory, a moment caught between breaths.
This piece is a bridge back to a world now slipping into legend, when steam and grit ruled the tracks, and the bond between man and machine was one of loyalty and respect. The handwritten notes framing the photo speak in quiet tones, like the careful words of an old railway hand guiding you through his memories. You are not just holding an image–you are standing there, soot on your skin, the faint rattle of wheels in your ears, sharing the patient, timeless waiting of the outbound train.
